Can you buy physical silver in an IRA?

Yes, you can buy physical silver in an IRA as long as you use a self-directed IRA and the silver meets IRS purity and product standards. The process works the same way as buying physical gold in an IRA, with the custodian facilitating the purchase and an approved depository handling storage.

To buy physical silver in your IRA, you first need an account with a custodian that specializes in precious metals. Traditional brokerage IRAs at firms like Fidelity and Schwab do not support physical metal purchases. Once your self-directed IRA is set up and funded, you select from a list of IRS-approved silver products. Your custodian places the order with an authorized dealer, and the silver is shipped directly to the depository.

Approved silver products must be at least 99.9 percent pure. Popular eligible options include American Silver Eagles, which are produced by the U.S. Mint, Canadian Silver Maple Leafs, Austrian Silver Philharmonics, and silver bars from recognized refiners. Collectible, numismatic, or rare silver coins are not eligible even if they contain sufficient silver content.

One consideration specific to silver is the volume required for significant dollar value. Silver is priced much lower per ounce than gold, so accumulating $50,000 worth of silver means storing a much larger physical quantity than $50,000 worth of gold. This can translate to higher storage costs at the depository because fees are sometimes based on the physical space or weight of your holdings rather than just their dollar value.

The tax treatment is identical to gold in an IRA. In a traditional IRA, silver gains are tax-deferred. In a Roth IRA, silver gains are tax-free. And like gold, holding silver inside an IRA avoids the 28 percent collectible capital gains tax rate that applies to physical silver sold outside of a retirement account.

Silver’s price tends to be more volatile than gold, which means it can deliver larger gains during upswings but also steeper losses during downturns. For IRA investors with a long time horizon, this volatility smooths out, and silver’s combination of monetary value and industrial demand creates a unique growth profile that complements a gold allocation.
